NEMA’s Dementia Care – Caring with Compassion

At NEMA, we understand how challenging it can be to care for a loved one with dementia. We offer three ways to support families:

  1. Homecare for Dementia Patients – Our specially trained dementia caregivers and nurses provide personalized in-home care to help seniors live comfortably.

  2. Dementia Care Homes – Safe and secure memory care facilities designed to provide 24/7 care for seniors with dementia.

  3. Respite Care for Family Caregivers – Temporary stays at NEMA Care Homes, giving family members a much-needed break.

We also train home caregivers so that families can provide better dementia support at home.

Dementia progresses in seven stages, from mild forgetfulness to complete dependence:

1.No Impairment – No noticeable symptoms, but brain changes may have begun.

2.Very Mild Decline – Slight memory lapses, like forgetting names, but still independent

.3.Mild Cognitive Decline – Noticeable memory problems, difficulty organizing and concentrating.

4.Moderate Decline – Struggles with daily tasks, confusion about recent events, trouble with finances.

5.Moderately Severe Decline – Requires assistance with daily activities; forgets personal details like address or phone number.

6.Severe Decline – Major memory gaps, trouble recognizing loved ones, needs help with dressing, bathing.

7.Very Severe Decline – Loss of ability to speak, walk, or swallow; complete dependence on caregivers.

In early- to mid-stage dementia, many seniors can live at home with support. However, beyond stage 5, specialized dementia care at carehomes with holistic care is often needed to ensure safety and well-being.

Recognizing Dementia Symptoms

Dementia affects memory, thinking, and social skills, making daily life difficult. Signs include:Cognitive Changes – Memory loss, trouble speaking, confusion, difficulty solving problems, disorientation, getting lost, poor decision-making.Behavioral Changes – Mood swings, depression, anxiety, aggression, paranoia, hallucinations, sleep disturbances.

Dementia is usually caused by brain cell damage, but other factors can contribute, including:

1.Alzheimer’s disease – The most common type of dementia, linked to abnormal plaques and tangles in the brain.

2.Vascular dementia – Caused by poor blood flow to the brain, often due to strokes.

3.Lewy body dementia – Involves protein deposits in the brain, causing hallucinations and movement issues.

4.Frontotemporal dementia – Affects behavior, judgment, and speech.

5.Mixed dementia – A combination of multiple dementia types.

6.Parkinson’s & Huntington’s disease – Can lead to cognitive decline and personality changes.

Some dementia-like conditions can be treated and reversed if they are caused by

:•Vitamin deficiencies

•Thyroid problems

•Medication side effects

•Depression

•Brain tumors

Why Proper Dementia Care is Important

Without specialized care, dementia can lead to:

Malnutrition – Forgetting to eat or difficulty swallowing.

Pneumonia risk – Higher chances of infections due to swallowing issues

.Loss of independence – Inability to handle daily tasks like dressing, bathing, or cooking.

Wandering & fall risks – Many seniors get lost or have accidents.

End-stage complications – Leading to coma or fatal infections.

Caring for someone with dementia requires patience, understanding, and expertise. If home care becomes too difficult, a memory care home like NEMA provides the right support.
